Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Albany, 2005.
In April 1853 the efforts of a group of Swiss capitalists from Geneva finally came to fruition when they obtained a land grant from the French government in the region of Setif in Algeria. It marked the beginning of a Swiss involvement in the country that lasted for over one hundred years. As part of the deal the French government stipulated that La Compagnie genevoise de Setif the company set up to exploit the land, must build several villages to be inhabited by European immigrants which the company was responsible for recruiting. The company undertook this task with great enthusiasm and proceeded with the recruitment of "pious" and "sober" protestant immigrants whom it hoped would increase its chances of success.

But in spite of a fervent commitment by the company to the construction and recruitment of settlers for its villages, the project faltered when in the second year an outbreak of cholera put an end to the flow of immigrants from Switzerland. Despite several attempts, the company was unable to restart the flow of immigrants. Other difficulties including the high cost of European labor led the company to abandon its dream of a Swiss colony in Algeria populated by immigrants from the homeland. Instead the company shifted to almost exclusive use of the native work force.

In limiting our study to the period of 1853--1871, we attempt to analyze the often difficult and conflictual relationship between the company and the native inhabitants of the region. We also attempt to review how this company, which presented itself as playing a fair and evenhanded role in its relationship with this native population, actually did represent that local population, and all of Algeria in its correspondence and advertising. We also attempt to pose and answer the following question: Is there a particular element of "Swissness" in this approach to the colonization of Algeria?
