The Neo-Hellenic Enlightenment or 'Diaphotismos' refers to a period of revival in the intellectual life of Greece over the century and a half preceding the 1821 Revolution. One of the most striking features of the Diaphotismos must be its preoccupation with national degeneracy, a discourse that became ritualized over time into a veritable 'culture of self-contempt.' The present study attempts to show how this preoccupation with the national problem was persistently renewed by succeeding generations of Greek scholars.

The literature surrounding the Diaphotismos tends to suggest how closely mingled feelings of nationalism can be with self-worth, a process used here to reassess important subjects such as the language 'zetema.' Finally, previous histories have not sufficiently accounted for the native quotient in the interaction between the East and West during the Enlightenment. The following study clarifies this issue by showing how older Greek traditions guided the appropriation of European ideas that is so prominent a feature of the period.
