Thesis (M.A.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2005.
Over the past decade several studies have highlighted significant demographic changes in the United States, including a trend that by the year 2005 white males will only constitute 38% of the US workforce (Bond & Pyle, 1998). With the change in ethnicity and gender in the workforce, additional studies have been conducted to investigate factors that may contribute to healthy workplace diversity. However, much of what we currently know regarding best practices has been derived from the for-profit sector. There is an increasing need to know more about how this increasing diversity is being handled in the non-profit and human services fields. The city of Lowell and the surrounding communities of the Merrimack Valley, with a history of being a home to some of the newest immigrants to our nation, have maintained a reputation as a diverse region with complex strengths and needs. In light of both the shifts in demographics and the unique environment this area provides, this study examined two non-profit organizations in the Merrimack Valley in an effort to understand current climate and employee perceptions of workplace diversity for the non-profit sector of the American workforce. The study found that organizational disposition to diversity and respect for diversity leadership were related to important organizational outcomes of job satisfaction and organizational commitment.
