This research explored the stressors that affect African American police officers. A review of the literature indicated that the nature and extent of stress experienced by male and female African American law enforcement officers has not been adequately addressed. Fifty officers, 25 males and 25 females, in Pontiac, Michigan, were surveyed with two instruments designed for this study. Findings from the study revealed that African American policemen and policewomen experienced similar sources of stress, including those associated with conditions on the job; job assignment, tasks, or roles; interpersonal conflict with peers; and interpersonal relationships with managers and supervisors. Even though critical stressors were identified in each category, the greatest number of critical stressors for males and females were associated with organizational and management processes and procedures. Administrative and professional pressure and lack of support from higher-ranking officials created more stress beyond the inherent physical and psychological danger in police work. The findings suggest that reducing stress among African American police officers would be beneficial to the officers themselves, their coworkers, and the public that they serve, given their responsibility of protecting the safety of citizens and maintaining a peaceful environment.
