It has been suggested that adolescent sex offenders may be divided into those with deviant sexual interests and those who sexually abuse as part of a more pervasive pattern of antisocial behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between generalized delinquency, pedophilic interest and sexual arousal to deviant stimuli. Data related to the subjects' sexual and nonsexual offense histories were extracted from the clinical records of 165 adolescent sexual abusers. This study was based on three primary variables: (1) deviant sexual arousal as measured using phallometric procedures; (2) generalized delinquency, as measured using the Childhood and Adolescent Taxon Scale (Quinsey, Harris, Rice, & Cormier, 1998); and (3) pedophilic interest, as per the Screening Scale for Pedophilic Interests (SSPI; Seto & Lalumiere, 2001). The SSPI demonstrated a significant positive correlation with deviant sexual arousal, and offenses against multiple victims was found to be the most heavily weighted of the SSPI items. These data generally support the validity of the SSPI among adolescent offenders, but and further modifications of the instrument appear to be warranted. Both childhood sexual abuse and generalized delinquency evidenced significant correlations with offending against multiple victims, suggesting the need for further research investigating possible indirect relationships between abuse history, delinquency, and deviant sexual arousal. Suggestions are made for future research of factors related to deviant sexual arousal, and potential modifications to the SSPI for use with adolescents are proposed.
