Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Claremont Graduate University, 2005.
Catholics have been participating in games and sports for several long centuries and continue to do so today. And yet, there has been little reflection from scholars of sport on the influence their Catholic faith has had on their participation. Nor has there been much reflection from Catholic theologians on games and sports as aspects of culture.

Catholics have been participating in games and sports for several long centuries and continue to do so today. This dissertation, which is divided into two sections, tries to fill the gaps left by these omissions. The first section treats of Medieval and Early Modern games and sports in Europe and the second of contemporary sports, primarily in the New World.{09}Both of these sections starts with an exploration of practices, and then moves to a consideration of theology. During the Medieval period, games and sports were practiced on Sundays and feast days, often on church property and were depicted in prayer books and on woodcuts and stained glass windows. The humanists incorporated physical recreation and sport into the school curriculum and the early Jesuits followed their lead. The ease with which the games and sports were incorporated into the Medieval and Early Modern cultures was supported by the Christian conception of the person as a unity of body and soul and the tendency of Christians to accept the customs of peoples from various cultures.

In the second section, we will learn that Catholics brought these longer traditions associated with games and sports with them to the New World. From the time they first opened schools, for example, the Jesuits provided time and space for physical recreation and sports. This tendency to accept games and sport continued into the twentieth century, as can be seen in examples such as the Jesuit-educated Vince Lombardi and Joe Paterno and the Immaculata College women's basketball team, which won the first women's national basketball championship in 1972. In the last two chapters I will construct a contemporary theological approach to sport which treats of the body as well as provides an account, using the flow theory of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, of how sport practices can lead to the human and spiritual growth of young people today.
