Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1996.
This paper tries to identify some current problems in Chinese language processing (CLP). It investigates the characteristics of the Chinese language fostered in the history of Chinese literature, art and culture, observes the difficulties of CLP at various processing stages, and concludes that Chinese is more meaning-driven than form-driven, and needs to be treated differently from other more form-driven languages, such as English. It discovers that the main problem in CLP is an ignorance of the powerful combinability of Chinese characters manifest particularly in syntax-free sentences and the large number of permissible combinations of given words. Investigating each stage of CLP, their problems and possible solutions, this paper concludes that CLP should be considered as a whole process, running from character encoding through grammar checking. Because of the great involvement of semantic and cognitive mechanisms in sentence comprehension, it may not be possible to build a comprehensive grammar checker based on linguistic approaches. Obtaining all the legitimate combinations of a limited number of characters, storing them in a dictionary, and updating them each time when the program is used may be the only feasible way to check the grammatical legitimacy of an unknown character string.
