This study is an in-depth investigation of the origin and development of classifiers in Chinese based on the historical sources from the Jiaguwen 'Bone Inscription' and Jinwen 'Bronze Inscription' down to modern Chinese.

After proposing seven syntactic criteria for differentiating classifiers and measure words, this study analyzes the historical sources of classifier usage in different historical periods covering a time span of approximate three thousand years. One striking finding from the analysis is that the general classifier ge in Chinese has four different sources. Due to similarity in meaning and phonological development, these four classifiers joined together and developed into the most commonly used general classifier, ge, in modern Chinese. As the classifier ge developed from group measure in one way or another, this study hypothesizes that the appearance of classifiers in Chinese was motivated by the need to avoid ambiguity in counting things, i.e., to make a distinction between 'individual measures' and 'group measures.'

Unlike ge and other general classifiers, most specific classifiers developed directly from nominals. The fact that general classifiers derived essentially from group measure words, while specific classifiers developed more directly from nominals, suggests that once some general classifiers have been introduced into a language, specific classifiers might be introduced by extending the classificatory function initiated by general classifiers.

This study proposes three criteria for determining the maturity stage of the classifier system in Chinese: that classifiers must perform a categorical function, that there must be existence of structural properties of the classifier phrase as found in modern Chinese, and that classifier usage must be obligatory. Based on these three criteria, the development of classifiers in Chinese may be periodized as follows: (I) Emergence Period: The Shang, Zhou and Spring-Autumn; (II) Transition Period: The Han, Weijin and Tang; (III) Maturity Period: The Song Dynasty.

Based on the findings from this study, the author challenges the view that classifiers are not native to Chinese; he further states that classifiers as a typological feature are indigenous to Chinese. This statement does not deny borrowing from neighboring languages including individual classifiers. As a system, however, the classifiers result fiom the internal development of classifiers in Chinese.
