Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Barbara, 1993.
Natural discourse is produced in prosodically definable segments, variably called 'phonological phrases', 'intonation units' (IU), etc. Intonation units often do not match the fundamental units of structure in syntactic theories and are not constrained by the widely-held conception of grammatical constituency. The gap between theory and production data invites alternative approaches to grammar. This dissertation is a study of the grammar of Mandarin IUs in conversational discourse, with the goal of bettering our understanding of language by analyzing observable speech habits or patterns.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Natural discourse is produced in prosodically definable segments, variably called 'phonological phrases', 'intonation units' (IU), etc. Intonation units often do not match the fundamental units of structure in syntactic theories and are not constrained by the widely-held conception of grammatical constituency. The gap between theory and production data invites alternative approaches to grammar. Twelve ordinary conversations, totaling about 4,415 IUs, are used in this study. We begin by examining, quantitatively, the grammatical structure of the Mandarin IU. The findings show that the overwhelming majority of the IUs do not exhibit a full-fledged clause form, and that non-clausal IUs are prevalent in the data, suggesting a different pattern of discourse organization from languages such as English. We show that when the IU correlates with a clause, the most favored clause form is a low transitivity verb with a single argument, i.e., X V, where X refers to different arguments in different types of clauses. Relatively predictable patterns in the correlation of IUs and certain grammatical elements are demonstrated; for example, arguments may not be expressed in a generalizing predication construction, while the highly identifiable agent-like argument of a quotation clause is typically specified. NP IUs, the least clause-like structure, appear to be widespread and display a wide array of functions besides expressing topics and discourse frames; crucially, they do not have to be integrated into a verbal predicate.

Based on these findings, I propose to recognize the grammatical correlates of the IU, termed 'speech units', as a fundamental level of linguistic structure. A new framework of syntax is outlined to capture the structure and the organization of speech units, and the phrasal nature of speech units is shown to be useful in explaining critical properties of Mandarin. This study, then, provides a case showing precisely how grammar can be profitably approached by examining natural discourse.
