There are three traditional approaches in developing a machine translation system: direct translation, transfer, and interlingual. Among them, the interlingual approach is the most economical and efficient. However, in this traditional interlingual method a system capable of translating M languages would require double M modules since each language demands two modules: analyzer and synthesizer.

Our proposed approach would unify the analysis and synthesis for one language; that is, one module can function not only as a parser but also a generator. Thus, the stated multilingual machine translation system would only require M modules, instead of double M modules.

The approach described here is implemented in the form of a reversible machine translation system that translates Mandarin and English bidirectionally. Moreover, the system also works as a test bench to translate the languages reversibly. Adopting the unification framework, the system is constructed by means of conversion of twenty-four verb lexical, syntactical, and semantic selections (Hornby 1975, 1984), based on valency theory (Tensiere 1953, Allerton 1982), into a logic program.
