I explain that boundedness and perfectivity are two independent phenomena in temporal reference. While the former denotes a feature of certain categories of situations (Aktionsart), the latter is one side of opposite aspectual views. Bounded sentences are those in the established structures that indicate the referred action has an inherent termination, whereas perfectivity describes whether a situation, bounded or unbounded, has actually occurred. In Mandarin, aspects such as perfectivity exhibit themselves in the general frame of Aktionsart.

In line with the characteristics of various VP structures, I classify ba sentences as belonging to one of three categories in Chen Ping's (1988) situational system: Accomplishment, Simple Change, and Complex Change. All three of these are bounded situations. Simple Change, though not possessing an established termination, signifies a final point on the time axis when the instantaneous change it refers to occurs, and thus is bounded. Accomplishment and Complex Change, each having an inherent termination, are also bounded. Ba sentences in various structures in theory reflect the basic features of these situations.

I show that the five aspectual expressions occurring in the ba construction--le and -guo on one hand and -qilai, -zhe and -xiaqu on the other--represent the two sides of the perfective-imperfective opposition. Furthermore, while the verb suffix -le and the sentence particle le syntactically merge in some ba sentences, the two aspectual indications that they originally represented--perfectivity vs. inchoativity--may also merge. Thus for these two reasons, the hypothesis that suggests the ba construction requires a perfective expression specifying the conceptual boundary of the action overstates the issue that it seeks to explain.
