Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, San Diego, 1992.
This thesis is concerned with some outstanding issues in phrasal phonology, such as the nature of the syntax-phonology interface, the accessibility of syntactic information to phonology, the property of prosodic hierarchy, and so on. After a survey of many Chinese dialects, I discuss one by one, in detail, various syntactic conditions which affect phonology, including functional relations, empty categories, branching asymmetry, c/m-command conditions, IC cuts, the edge condition, etc., and based on such a discussion as well as on a general evaluation of several leading theories and assumptions, I put forward the claim that the process of syntactic accessibility to phonology is a process during which the prosodic structure is coded by syntactic information. In other words, syntactic conditions are effective within prosodic domains. The model that I propose for the mapping between syntax and phonology is seen in (1a-b) and the trisected model that I propose for the organization of prosodic hierarchy is given in (2).Subjects--Topical Terms:

It is my hope that the hypotheses which I propose from the perspective of Chinese phrasal tonology will provide a universal explanation of the organization of phonological components.
