Chapter 1 discusses the methodological problems of translation research and suggests that the object of investigation should be the translation process defined as a problem-solving activity performed by the translator.

Chapter 2 discusses the introspective paradigm and how the think-aloud methodology is applied to translation research. The conclusion of this discussion is that the validity of this methodology is questionable.

Chapter 3 presents a new methodology based on Vygotskyan theory regarding the social origin of cognition. In this theory, it is argued that the translation process must be studied in its ontogenesis and that this can be studied by having translators at various levels of development externalize their internal strategies during the conduct of joint activity.

Chapter 4 discusses the results from a think-aloud and joint translating experiment with novice, advanced and expert translators. It is found that the think-aloud data provides limited evidence of translators' strategies--except for novices--whereas the joint translating data uncovers deeper processing at all levels and is easier to interpret.

Chapter 5 analyzes the translation process in its ontogenesis and shows that there are important differences between novice, advanced and expert translators. In conclusion, it is suggested that more research be conducted on expert translators.
