How different is Chinese from other languages? According to Li & Thompson's typological distinction (

ubject prominent), Chinese is a non-subject prominent language, in contrast to subject prominent languages such as English. The basic idea of this classification is that a subject does not play a central role in Chinese syntax. If any language truly lacks a central role for the subject, then not only will many cross-linguistic generalizations based on the notion of subject not apply to this language, but the universality of the notion will also become questionable.

My dissertation argues that when the subject is correctly identified in Chinese syntax, it can be seen to play a central role. In particular, Chinese has a presentative structure, a passive structure, and resultative compounding which reflect universal principles for mapping argument structure to the subject and other GFs. The observed differences between Chinese and English can be traced to a difference at the most superficial level--the absence of morphemes for derivation, inflection, and overt topic-anaphoric pronouns.

Some Chinese linguists have studied the mapping of argument structure to GFs from the approach of GB theory. According to this theory, the alternative GFs bearing the same thematic role result from the interaction among the case filter, the theta criterion, and the ability or inability of a verb to assign case and theta role(s). However, the GB account relies too much on the hypothesis that there is abstract case in Chinese, and provides no convincing evidence for its existence.

In this dissertation, I use lexical mapping theory to account for the differences between passive and presentative sentences in Chinese and their counterparts in English. From the perspective of lexical mapping theory, every GF is an intersection of two feature specifications (

) and (
$\

). The alternative GFs, which a given thematic role can be mapped to are due to the interaction between its underspecified intrinsic classification and (morpho)lexical operations. The difference between English and Chinese is traced to intrinsic classification. This is the level where semantic distinctions make a difference and determine between what GFs a thematic role can be alternatively mapped onto.
