Thesis (Ed.D.)--Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, 2003.
This dissertation seeks to demonstrate the value to the student pursuing a professional church career of a seminary or university education that offers a balance between the intellectual objectives of the university and the practical needs of the church. Using the mentoring model from Homer's Odyssey as a starting point this author demonstrates a long history of mentoring as an effective vehicle for training in many professions. Regarding the training of church professionals, this writer seeks to show the need for the university to offer a sound theological education which honors the deep educational tradition of the church as well as provides effective training in practical ministry to the end that the students will be better equipped to assume their positions of responsible leadership in the church.

A historical review shows that the church has always been challenged to find a balance between the practical and the theoretical. The reality of the tension between the goals of the church hierarchy and those seeking a spiritually-based ministry is shown by those who in the earliest days of the church sought the solitude of the desert. During the Dark Ages the church kept alive the educational objectives abandoned by the failing Roman Empire. Over the years the scale tipped in favor of the academic pursuits of the educational profession as the church embraced Scholasticism. Prior to and during the Reformation there were those who sought the Via Moderna, a model of ministry education based on the Scriptures in the original languages and the early church fathers. These years also found the church developing new concepts of experiential education.

This dissertation shows how experiential education as characterized by mentor-modeled internships has been utilized in the fields of business, in early American education, in medicine, as well as in the church. For the contemporary seminary, this writer argues for a mentor-modeled internship as the most effective way for the modern student to be exposed to the real-world experiences of the church's ministries.
