Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Washington, 2005.
In this dissertation, I have tried to argue that music education is essential for developing the character of youth. Therefore I have designed an "ideal instrumental ensemble program" to help the young generation in Taiwan to grow musically, intellectually and morally. I wish to use an instrumental ensemble program to promote the educational method of interdisciplinary study, the theory of multiple intelligences, the ideology of democracy, and the importance of world music education in Taiwan. Through the ensemble experience, students will learn how to be good citizens of Taiwan and loving citizens of the global village.

The mission of this program is to create good citizens for Taiwan in the short run and for the world in the long term. The goal for the program is to enable students to grow as intelligent human beings, as well as excellent musicians, in a cooperative learning environment. Music and musicians are the primary motivating force behind the ensemble. The ensemble exists for the students. The students do not exist for the ensemble. The development of every individual student is the main focus of this instrumental ensemble program. The objectives for this program are to: (1) Encourage students to participate and be involved with the community. (2) Enable the students to grow as intelligent human beings, as well as excellent musicians, in a cooperative learning environment.

I believe that this "ideal instrumental ensemble program" will bring a lot of benefit and joy to many of my students in the future. I feel like the merchant in one of Jesus' parables, who was "looking for fine pearls, and when he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it" (Matthew 13:45--46 NIV). I am ready to dedicate my whole teaching career to implant the "ideal ensemble program" in my homeland.
