Thesis (D.A.)--University of Northern Colorado, 2005.
Robert Scholz's many contributions to music education, composition, and performance took place in three different parts of the world: Austria (1902--1938), the United States (1938--1986) and Taiwan (1962--1986). His venture to the Orient in 1963 kept him there until his death in 1986. Because some of his most important work happened in Taiwan and the Far East, awareness of his artistic output became obscured in the Western hemisphere. The purpose of this research is to bring forth the first comprehensive biography of Robert Scholz and to provide information needed for further research into his work and life in the world of music.

Biographical information on Scholz's life from 1902--1986 can be gleaned from interviews, newspaper articles, and written personal recollections. Scholz's biography underlines his valuable contributions to the world of pedagogy, conducting, vocal coaching, and music theory. Scholz wrote twelve musical compositions all in a traditional tonal style. All of his compositions are large instrumental works, reflecting his philosophy that instruments exceed the capabilities of the voice. Scholz also wrote a number of musicological and philosophical essays that reveal his thoughts on the subjects of physics, mathematics, philosophy, the science of sound production, music, language, and linguistics. He was truly a Renaissance man.

This study includes annotations of each of Scholz's compositions and essays, including musical examples and notes. A chronology of Scholz's life is provided, including a table of his musical performances. A collection of interviews with students of Scholz reveals personal observations of Scholz as a teacher and educator. The contents of two important collections of articles written by his students and colleagues---Here Is My Love and A Portrait of His Musical Endeavor---are provided, with English translations of the original Chinese titles. A bibliography of books, scores, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and audio recordings that includes unpublished sources that are not easily accessible. Scholz's contributions as a twentieth century musician can be further researched using these resources.
