A single exposure to estrogen disrupting compounds in the neonatal rat impaired later ovarian function. Induced precocious puberty and superovulation were used to assess the effects of such compounds upon ovulation and ovarian and uterine growth. The true estrogens genistein and DES reduced ovarian and uterine weights, but daidzein, a weaker estrogen, did not. No differences were observed with DDT; however, the pesticide dieldrin lowered ova counts. Dioxin, an industrial byproduct, reduced uterine weights, and bisphenol A, a component of plastics, had no significant effects. Control, dioxin- and dieldrin-treated female rats paired overnight with an adult male rat resulted in 100% of control females but only 50% and 20% of dioxin and dieldrin females mating, respectively. These results suggest that genistein, DES, dieldrin, and dioxin can impair reproductive function as a consequence of neonatal exposure. Therefore, environmental exposure to these compounds may have deleterious effects on female fertility.
