The researcher explored whether consensual BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, or sexual sadism and sexual masochism) participants have received biased care from mental health professionals. Results are presented of an anonymous internet-based survey administered to both BDSM individuals who have received psychological care and to mental health professionals. The survey included sociodemographic data and assessed basic attitudes towards those who engage in BDSM. Participants were also invited to write narrative accounts of biased or culturally sensitive care, from which common themes were identified. Mental health providers (N = 17) responded in fewer numbers than those who identified as BDSM-identified participants (N = 175). Descriptive characteristics of the sample are discussed. Themes from the qualitative data were identified and may be useful in informing the future development of guidelines for practitioners to work more responsibly with clients who identify as members of this often stigmatized sexual minority group. The researcher suggested guidelines for working ethically with BDSM consumers of mental health treatment based upon similar guidelines developed for working with lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients in psychotherapy.
