This research concerns the mastectomy experiences of married women ages 34 to 45 at the time of mastectomy from an existential-phenomenological perspective. The experiences of four women were analyzed, organized temporally---Life Before, Life After, and Life Goes On---and generally categorized according to Eigenwelt (self-world), Umwelt (physical body and world), and Mitwelt (social world).

Before mastectomy, women lived time as infinite in a healthy horizon. Reflecting on the possibility of "not being," their futures narrowed, threatening their chief life projects. Coming face to face with their finitude produced dramatic changes in the women's ways of being. They became assertive and used humor, faith, and prayer to cope with their new worlds of disease.

After mastectomy, the women were ill prepared for the severity of pain. They reluctantly confronted their altered bodies, unprepared for the results. They cried and grieved the loss of their breasts. Relationships changed; some spouses grew closer while other couples separated and soon divorced. Women realized the sexual value of their breasts and expressed fear of intimacy. Those remaining in their marriages resolved their fears, while the two divorced women struggled with rejection and intimacy fears. Children were affected emotionally, fearing their mother's disfigurement and early death. Their goals became short-term and mostly centered around the immediate families. Friendships changed as the women developed lasting friendships with other survivors and found fulfillment sharing their experiences. They reevaluated their priorities; actions became more congruent with their emotions as they lived each day more fully.

But life goes on and the mastectomy experience continues into the future. Fear of premature death is ever present. Fears experienced at the initial diagnosis return with every little ache and pain. Women continue to reflect on their finitude. Physical discomfort and lingering pain continue, and they no longer trust their bodies. Women feel an invisible but real wall separating them from others. In anticipating problems with sexual intimacy, women will avoid some social situations where intimacy might result. Unfortunately they may never get beyond their self-consciousness. The future now is most important because it represent possibilities. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
