For over sixty years there have been persistent complaints of a shortage of professional nurses in the United States. The Forecasting Model for Nursing Workforce, developed by this investigator, integrates the market forces that have been identified in the literature that impact the supply of and demand for nurses.

The Registered Nurse Employment Survey was designed to measure the supply of nurses. Supply was defined as the willingness of a nurse to seek employment as a nurse. The Registered Nurse Demand Survey was designed to measure the demand for nurses in five categories: associate degree nurses, baccalaureate nurses, clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, and mastered prepared nurse administrators. Demand was defined as the desire of a facility to hire a nurse for a particular position.

One hundred forty-eight registered nurses from the state of Georgia responded to the supply questionnaire. The typical respondent was a white female staff nurse, married with an associate or a baccalaureate degree, working full time with an annual family income between

Frequency, correlation, regression statistics and factor analysis were utilized to answer the research questions posed in this study. The results of the supply analyses revealed that age of the nurse, age of the youngest child, wages, benefits, career aspiration of the nurse, family employment status, economic concerns, and location of the facility were all significantly related to the decision of a nurse to seek employment as a nurse. A new variable, workload, was also shown to significantly impact this decision.

Factor analysis of the data yielded initial support for the use of the Forecasting Model for Nursing Workforce as a decision-making model regarding the supply of and, demand for nurses. Three supply factors, the health care delivery system, the U.S. economic system, and nurse characteristics were all significantly related to a nurse's decision to seek employment as a nurse.

The study data support the opinions of nurse leaders and give credence to the fears of many professional nurse organizations that the current supply of nurses is inadequate at present and this is a serious matter for health care institutions. The Forecasting Model for Nursing Workforce incorporates the influences of supply and demand in an economic model that seeks to determine the market equilibrium for the nursing workforce.
