One of the critical features of human ontogeny has long been the development of problem-solving abilities. The present research was designed to examine how infants' goal-directed behaviours associated with discrimination learning and means-ends learning could uncover the underlying structure of selective attention in 9 1/2 and 10 1/2-month-old infants. Specifically, a central goal of this dissertation was to investigate how attention and action are organized in the context of teleological or goal-oriented behaviours.

The dissertation describes two studies in which the infant is encouraged to divide attentional resources to either an end-state goal or to a movement process involved in achieving the goal. Study 1 (discrimination study) observed the influence of an attentionally demanding motor task on learning and cognition, while Study 2 (means-ends study) observed the influence of an attentionally demanding goal on movement preparation and execution. When mental resources were directed to thinking about movement, the end-goal became compromised; conversely, when resources were directed to thinking about the goal-state, the movement became compromised.

The findings reported in this dissertation ultimately offer the field of developmental psychology and cognitive development a unique and previously undocumented contribution. Principally, a new nexus of selective attention and planned action has been proposed wherein the interaction of thinking and attention are co-constrained within the Dual Constraints Model of infant attention. The results of the discrimination study and the means-ends study are discussed within the context of adult models of attention, problem-solving development, motor development, intelligence, tool-use, and the role of parents and caregivers.
