Thesis (Ed.D.)--The George Washington University, 2001.
This dissertation is part of a larger effort "to test the notion that learner autonomy could best be understood in terms of a four factor construct made up of desire, resourcefulness, initiative and persistence (Confessore & Carr, 2000, p. 1)." In the present study, the formation of intentions as it relates to the desire to learn adds to the existing model by Confessore and Confessore (1994). This new theory provides the framework for understanding and assessing the precursors to learner autonomy, intention formation. From this understanding, a 57-item inventory (The Inventory of Intentional Behavior) was created to assess and diagnose the extent to which an individual possess the characteristics associated with intentionality.

A comprehensive review of the literature led to the development of a three-factor structure: basic freedoms, managing power and acquired skills. Fifty-seven items were developed and tested. Items were directly linked with passages in the literature to establish face validity.

Three hundred and sixty respondents rated their perceptions of self on a zero (never) to ten (always) scale. The following data were collected: gender, age, domestic status, and educational level. No significant demographic issues emerged and there were no significant interactions.

Principle component analysis revealed 43 items loaded significantly on their respective first principal component. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire inventory is .90. The reliability for factors l, 2, and 3 was found to be .88, .84 and .56 respectively. The inventory was re-administered two-weeks later. The test-retest reliability is high at .90. The inventory as it exists contains 14 weak items. These item were reviewed to determine the inherent difficulty: language, relationship to the theory or reverse scoring.

It is reasonable to assert that the Inventory of Intentional Behavior is a coherent measurement scale of the precursors of intentionality. Further research should evaluate the construct with regards to the now 43-item structure. Pearson correlations should be calculated to determine the contribution each revised item makes to its subscale and the weak items should be eliminated in order to ensure the final instrument is as brief as possible while retaining power.
