Thesis (D.Ed.)--Seattle University, 1996.
This qualitative study asked leaders to examine a critical incident using the Enneagram model of self-understanding and the Brent Personality Assessment System (BPAS), an attentional style inventory based on Enneagram typology. (The BPAS was originally known as the Brent Attentional Style Inventory (BASI).) Another instrument, the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Inventory was available to participants if they needed to determine their type or gain more perspective on their types, but the participants in this study did not use the RHETI because of their extensive knowledge of the Enneagram. The purpose of the study was to assess the usefulness of these instruments to personal growth and self knowledge in the context of leadership development.

A model of leadership development originated by William D. Hitt (1993) formed the context of the study. His precepts were (a) Self-examination is essential for self-understanding; (b) self-understanding is essential for personal growth; and (c) personal growth is essential for leadership development.

The subjects, fourteen leaders who were serious students of the Enneagram, were administered the BPAS. Each then responded to a set of questions that guided them to examine a critical incident or situation of adversity. Their analysis of the incident in terms of their self-knowledge based on their experience with the Enneagram and the results of the BPAS was recorded in narrative form. The resulting synthesis from each participant was stated as a testament of personal transformation.

Participants recorded an overwhelming and positive response to the Enneagram system as being essential and key for self-understanding. Additionally, they reported that the Enneagram deepened the skills of awareness and presence which enabled them to handle times of adversity. The BPAS was found to be moderately helpful for this process.

It is recommended that the Enneagram model in conjunction with the RHETI and BPAS be recognized as tools for self-understanding in the field of transformational leadership.
