A Middle Eastern personality typology, Enneagram theory, captured the attention of American social scientists within the last twenty years. Although it remained obscure, this personality system possessed a face validity that appealed to students of human behavior. Proponents of the theory conducted both qualitative and quantitative studies to find evidence for its validity.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A Middle Eastern personality typology, Enneagram theory, captured the attention of American social scientists within the last twenty years. Although it remained obscure, this personality system possessed a face validity that appealed to students of human behavior. Proponents of the theory conducted both qualitative and quantitative studies to find evidence for its validity.

The lack of quantitative evidence continues to prohibit the theory's acceptance by behavioral scientists. Current research focuses on the development and validation of instruments for personality-typing. Through the construction of valid and reliable instruments, proponents hope to validate the Enneagram system. While encouraging, the resulting data provides insufficient evidence for validation of either the instruments or the theory.

Recognizing the lack of evidence, the researcher chose to address that deficiency. Three well-constructed Enneagram inventories, designed by Cohen and Palmer, Wagner, and Zinkle, were selected for factor analyses with the goal of demonstrating factor validity. Additionally, the researcher administered Holland's Vocational Preference Inventory hoping that a joint analysis would support concurrent validity.

Data collection began with the administration of the four instruments to 340 subjects. Raw subscale scores for each inventory provided data for the iterated principal factor analyses. Following a varimax rotation, the Holland and Enneagram typological theories furnished the framework for factor interpretation.

Thirty unique and interpretable factors derived from the four classes of analyses, and 18 other factors were substantially identical to those obtained earlier. First, the study of the individual inventories produced a total of 17 factors. Second, six factors resulted from the analysis of all Enneagram instruments combined. Third, the analyses of each Enneagram inventory with the Vocational Preference Inventory yielded a total of 20 factors. Fourth, 11 factors surfaced in the composite analysis of all four inventories.

Only three factors displayed loadings that included subscales representing both Enneagram and Hollandian theory. While data supplied evidence for the factor validation of the Enneagram instruments, concurrent validity with the Holland inventory received weak support. Results indicated the need for further research to assist in establishing the validity of the Enneagram instruments.
