This dissertation involves a study of speakers' practices for referring to people in Korean and English, using the framework of conversation analysis. Using naturally-occurring conversational data, the study addresses some of the issues that have been largely neglected so far, specifically the interactional uses of overt self/recipient-reference and “quasi-pronouns” in Korean, and of zero anaphora in English. This study aims to contribute to second/foreign language learning/teaching by comparing and contrasting personal reference in the two languages.

Fine-grained analyses of the interactional and sequential contexts in which the referential forms under investigation occur reveal observable orderliness in the use of these forms in the two languages. Korean speakers build their talk to incorporate an overt form of reference for themselves or for their addressed recipients in order to accomplish a range of interactional projects (for example, responsibility-attribution, disagreement, projecting further talk by the current speaker, or selecting the next speaker), often marking the reference form with a particle relevant to the action being implemented. Proximal versus distal demonstrative-based quasi-pronouns for referring to a co-present person are deployed by speakers to display their category membership with respect to the referent (and the recipient). With regard to non-present person reference, the choice between the two types of quasi-pronouns is exploited not only in differentiating among parties to a conversation in terms of their relative knowledge of the referent but also in differentiating among multiple referents by, for example, signaling the status or degree of protagonism with which the speaker intends to endow the referent.

Unlike previously-held assumptions, zero anaphora may be systematically deployed in English conversations as a resource for achieving certain important interactional functions. Some of these functions are marking the current talk as a second saying, resuming the prior turn-constructional unit after a parenthetical insert, marking maximum continuity, avoiding a choice among alternative reference forms, or displaying a secondary-level of the action being done by the current talk.
