(2) According to the literature, what are ten design and content elements in software that are conducive to girls' learning and playing styles? (3) Are the ten design and content elements present in the six current girl-specific software programs? (4) Do the six current girl-specific software programs engage girls between the ages 7 to 14 in grades 2 through 8?

The sample consisted of 36 girls, ages 7 to 14 in Grades 2 through 8, from a public elementary school in Orange County, California; a public middle school in Orange County, California; and a private K-6 school in Los Angeles County, California. The three instruments developed for this study were a demographic survey, a closed-ended survey used to collect responses of the girls regarding specific software and the ten design and content elements of the software programs, and a set of probe questions used during a group discussion to elicit responses from the girls about the software programs.

Analysis of the data revealed that the girls' attitude scores fell in the high positive range for the girl-specific software programs used in the study. The data also indicated that the frequency of the ten design and content elements' presence in the six software programs ranged in the percentage range of 80%-100%. The findings were contradictory in that the highest ranking attitude mean scores and the highest percentage of respondents' choice of software regarding the specific six software programs did not coincide with the highest rankings of the design and content elements present in the software.

Future research is recommended on a larger scale incorporating both gender-specific and nongender-specific software, expanding the geographic range of the sample, and providing more insights into a diverse demographic population.
