This thesis is structured as a gathering and development of information supporting the design of a climbing structure and facility. To the end of effectively presenting this material; no prior knowledge of climbing is assumed. The sections are structured to build the readers' knowledge base allowing them to trace the development of the final design as well inform potential wall designers in their own efforts. The sections of this thesis are: (1) Orienting the reader to climbing. (2) A review the history of the sport. (3) An examination and classification of the natural climbing environment. (4) A summary of the historical development of manufactured climbing environments. (5) Development design guidelines for climbing facilities. (6) Program proposal. (7) Statement of design criteria and mission statement for the project. (8) Discussion of site selection. (9) Presentation of the design. (10) Development of a wall construction system. (11) Evaluation of the design.
