High school guidance counselors play an important role as they help students choose from the many options available after graduation. Because of the long-term implications of the choices available and because of the counselors unique role, it is important to know if any bias exists as counselors consider the options available to students who differ in race, gender or socioeconomic status.

Because of the long-term implications of the choices available and because of the counselors unique role, it is important to know if any bias exists as counselors consider the options available to students who differ in race, gender or socioeconomic status.

A survey instrument was mailed to all high school counselors in Kentucky who advised juniors and seniors in the 1996–97 school year yielding a 62% response rate. Analysis identified differences in how counselors rated the chances of success for students described in six vignettes. The students described in the vignettes differed in academic preparedness, race, gender and socioeconomic status. Options available to the students included public research universities, private four year colleges, public regional universities, private junior colleges, community colleges, vocational and technical schools, the military and on-the-job training programs.

Findings indicate that as the academic rigor of the postsecondary option increases, the differences in counselor recommendations based on socioeconomic status increases, holding academic preparedness constant. At both high and low levels of academic preparedness, students from high socioeconomic families were expected to be more successful than were students from lower socioeconomic families. This trend seemed to reverse for less academically rigorous options as students from low socioeconomic backgrounds were expected to be more successful at on-the-job training programs and in the military.

These findings have important implications for graduate programs in school counseling and for those professional organizations that provide in-service training. While further study is warranted, these results stress the importance of training counselors to be more aware of the presence and the implications of bias in counseling.
