This study presents Valentine de Saint-Point and Benedetta Cappa Marinetti as principal figures in the changing character of gender and power in Italian Futurism. The following chapters demonstrate a steady course of disruption in their literary and visual art that undermined the original misogynist tenets of the movement. Their aesthetic production, in large part a result of personal relationships with F. T. Marinetti, Futurism's key theorist, placed them in a position of authority that has not been recognized in the post-history of the Futurist movement. A study of this nature, a comparison of the artistic production of the two principal female figures in Futurism, that incorporates issues of gender and power, has never been executed.

Valentine de Saint-Point is relatively unknown in Futurist scholarship, her reputation relinquished to obscurity in the history of early modernism. She can and should be brought forward and repositioned as a crucial figure in the developing stage of Futurism. Bringing to light a number of works of art by Saint-Point, I have expanded the study of her oeuvre to include the visual arts and demonstrate connections between her visual and literary work created during her time spent with the Futurists. Benedetta Cappa Marinetti is often looked at in a one-dimensional manner, as the wife of F. T. Marinetti, an apologist for Fascism, and finally, a participant in the less heroic “second” Futurism. I look at her work and her relationship with Marinetti from another stance, one that searches out the disruptive nuances in the discourse on gender in her works. Analysis of her visual and literary work indicates that her influence on Marinetti, and thus on Futurist rhetoric, was paramount to the development of the second phase of Futurism.

Based on the findings of my research and critical analysis, I propose that Saint-Point and Benedetta's works can be construed as a site of symbolic struggle against the misogynist agendas of their milieu. While appropriating the images and rhetoric of the masculinist agendas of Futurism and Fascism and working from what might be considered a subaltern position, they managed to be confrontational and to forge a space for the feminine voice. The actions of Saint-Point and Benedetta subsequently caused changes and shifts in Futurist ideology, thus confirming the authority of their position in Italian Futurism. Whether in the realm of the symbolic or the real, Valentine de Saint-Point and Benedetta Cappa Marinetti maintained a constant, and formidable force against the Futurist desire to suppress the feminine.
