The purpose of this study was to evaluate the work of the clinical facilitators who supervise trainee nurses whilst they are undertaking their placement in medical and surgical wards as part of their university diploma course. Their work was thus at the interface between higher education and employment.

The evaluation was undertaken from three perspectives: that is, the outcomes of clinical facilitation; the process of clinical facilitation; and the views on clinical facilitation held by key stakeholders including students, hospital staff, university staff, and managers.

Outcome measures proved difficult to identify despite there being archival data from an employer's evaluation and from the university records. The process was explored through in-depth interviews with the 12 clinical facilitators using a reconstitutive ethnographic approach. The data elicited by this method allowed for the construction of a two dimensional model of clinical facilitation covering direct supervision of students; and managerial, organizational, and strategic roles.

The views of 16 university staff, 150 ward staff, 600 students, and 10 managers were sought using interviews and focus groups where feasible, and a questionnaire for each group. The questionnaires contained common elements for all groups thus allowing for comparison and contrast. From the questionnaires, data were available regarding views of the utility of the six supervisory teaching methods; the relative value of the various persons encountered by students on their placement; and the extent to which the clinical facilitators had met their stated objectives.

Whilst it did not prove possible to use a suitable output measure for the clinical facilitators work, the views of stakeholders were largely positive regarding this work. Clinical facilitators were ranked second most useful on placement behind the designated assessor mentor but well ahead of the university link tutor. The supervision method most favored by students was demonstration of a skill by an expert. The consensus was that the clinical facilitators had met their objectives but with some reservation regarding improving communication.
