A fundamental particle cannot have an electric dipole moment (EDM) unless both the time reversal (T) and parity (P) symmetries are broken. Therefore the measurement of a such a moment is of great fundamental interest. We have measured the electric dipole moment of the thallium atom to be Subjects--Topical Terms:

We have measured the electric dipole moment of the thallium atom to be $d \sb{a} $ = (1.6 $\ pm $ 5.0) $\ times $ 10 $\ sp{-24}e $ cm. A known theoretical relation between the thallium ground state atomic dipole moment and the electric dipole moment of the electron, $d \sb{a} $/ $d \sb{e} $ = $- $5 85, allows us to state that $d \sb{e} < $ 2.7 $\ pm $ 8.3 $\ times $ 10 $\ sp{-27}e $ cm. Extreme care was taken towards limiting systematics.
