Most research on the retirement decision has focused on the behavior of individual workers and particularly on that of male workers. Little is known about the effect of one spouse's decision to retire on the retirement decision of the other. Understanding the interaction of spouses' retirement decisions may be an important missing element in models developed to date that attempt to explain retirement planning.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The data (male and female workers data) are first studied to understand their characteristics by constructing several cross tabulations. These tabulations strongly support the joint retirement hypothesis, i.e., husbands and wives tend to retire at the same time. Also, comparisons between the male and the female workers data are made; they reveal that the two data sets have different distributions in several variables, such as the health status, annual earnings, education, and so on.

In order to study the inter-relationship of the retirement decision between husbands and wives, the conditional probability models that reflect the characteristics of the wives' decision to retire dependent on the husbands' are constructed for the male and female workers' data. Then, a simultaneous logit model which is useful for analyzing correlations between the dichotomous dependent variables is constructed for both male and female workers' data.

Analyses of these models yield significant results. First, for the conditional models, the husband's retirement will increase the probability of the wife's retirement. In other words, husbands and wives tend to retire at the same time. Second, for the simultaneous logit model, the wife's retirement has a positive (and statistically significant) effect on the probability of the husband's retirement, and vice-versa. This may be evidence that the couples' retirement years are complementary.

Lastly, the dissertation states the findings coming from the parameter estimates of the conditional probability model and the logit model, discusses the female labor force participation rates implied by these findings, points out several problems it has and indicates future research directions.
