Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2012.
This project examined the unique and specific psychological issues and needs of parents whose child has died from a terminal illness. A recent study focusing on these families who have experienced these losses has confirmed that the leading cause of child death, after accidents and homicide, is childhood terminal illness---specifically, pediatric cancer (Kazak & Noll, 2004). Due to the realities of childhood cancer that exist in society, and also deaths resulting from these illnesses, professionals need to cultivate understanding and develop attentiveness to this population. Recognizing the clinical challenges that can come about for these families is quintessential in assessing the contributing factors to a successful therapeutic relationship and treatment process.

Additionally this project was implemented to raise awareness, and disperse information to, mental health professionals and paraprofessionals. In order to fully grasp and address the entirety of these families' experiences, it was important to note the unique aspects of what their grieving process entail, what family dynamics generally exist, and how this type of loss affect the couple and family systemically. In addition to the literature that was critically reviewed on this topic, clinical input from experts in the field who have clinically worked with this population was also incorporated to gain a more solid understanding regarding this issue and to fill the gaps in the literature. Moreover, additional limitations, suggestions for future research, and the implications of the project are discussed as part of the thesis manuscript.
