This study examines the mental health experiences of lesbian/bisexual women in the process of trying to conceive (TTC) compared to lesbian/bisexual women in the postpartum period (PP). Thirty-three lesbian/bisexual women participated in this research (TTC, n=15, PP, n=18). Participants completed standardized questionnaires assessing symptoms of depression, anxiety, relationships satisfaction and perceived social support and participated in qualitative interviews regarding barriers to TTC. No significant differences were found between groups on the dependent variables. Qualitative analysis confirmed that many stressors and structural barriers exist for lesbian/bisexual women who are TTC. This study suggests that lesbian/bisexual women who are TTC experience comparable levels of depression and anxiety symptoms, social support and relationship satisfaction compared to PP women. Further, structural barriers to conception have emotional consequences. The findings from this study support Meyer's Minority Stress Model and have important clinical and policy implications for social work.
