This study examined the effects of perceived social support and age at the time of divorce on satisfaction with life in late adolescents who come from both divorced and intact families. Specifically, a group consisting of late adolescents/young adults between 18-22 years of age who reported parental divorce was compared to a group of late adolescent/young adults 18-22 years of age who reported intact marital family structure. The groups were compared using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Perceived Social Support Family Scale (Pss-Fa). The scores of 132 males and females were analyzed using independent-samples t test and correlation and regression analyses. The results indicated significant differences in satisfaction with life between later adolescents from divorced family structures and from intact family structures. However, the effect size differences were small. The results indicated both groups perceived equal amounts of social support from family/kin. There was a significant positive correlation between satisfaction with life and perceptions of social support in later adolescents of both groups. There was a significant, negative correlation between satisfaction with life and age at the time of divorce in later adolescents from divorced family of origin. The regression analyses revealed that the risk factor age at the time of divorce predicted the strongest, negative effect on long-range satisfaction with life. In the total sample, family of origin status predicted the strongest, negative effect on long-range satisfaction with life.
