A research questionnaire was distributed to thirty-five (n = 35) firefighters in western New York to measure knowledge of the contributing modifiable risk factors for CVD. The majority of firefighters had optimal knowledge of all six modifiable risk factors, with high blood pressure having the lowest score. Results from the Framingham Point Score revealed 11.4% of firefighters score in the ≥ 20% risk, or high risk category. Results from the MEDFICTS food frequency questionnaire revealed 11.4% of fire fighters eat a high fat diet, or score in the high risk category. These results could assist registered dietitians in developing a cardiovascular nutrition education program by providing baseline data on the current knowledge, CVD risk and dietary behaviors of firefighters.
