Thesis (Ed.D.)--Union University, 2011.
The purpose of this study was to explore whether pass/fail outcomes of medical technology (MT) graduates in Tennessee on the ASCP National Certification Exam can be predicted based on curriculum plans, grade-point averages, and college majors. This study addressed research questions (individually or in combination) to determine whether the following variables were significant predictors of pass/fail outcomes on the MT (ASCP) National Certification Examinations for MT graduates: (a) curriculum plans, grade-point averages (GPA), and college majors, (b) curriculum plan, (c) grade-point averages, (d) college major, (e) curriculum plans and grade point averages, (f) curriculum plans and college majors, and (g) grade-point averages and college majors. The study sample consisted of 282 medical technology graduates (n = 282) from six Medical Technology programs in the state of Tennessee. Graduate records for five consecutive graduation years (2003 - 2007) were used in this study. Because the dependent variable was dichotomous and the independent variables were continuous or categorical in nature, logistic regression analysis was used to address the research questions and to test the hypotheses. When statistical tests were computed, GPA and the 2+2 curriculum plan were found to be the most statistical significant (p < 0.05) independent variables for predicting pass/fail outcomes of medical technology graduates on the MT (ASCP) National Certification Examination (i.e. GPA, p = .000 and the 2+2 Curriculum plan, p =.03). A 2+2 curriculum plan of a Medical Technology program consists of two years of college preparation and two years of professional didactic and clinical experience, usually in a university-based MT program. Based on these statistical findings, it was concluded that it is possible to predict pass/fail outcomes of medical technology graduates based on GPA and the 2+2 curriculum plan. In other words, graduates with GPA's of 2.2 to 4.0 and are enrolled in a 2+2 curriculum plan, are more likely to pass the national certification examination. Likewise, graduates with GPA's below those ranges and are not enrolled in a 2+2 curriculum plan are less likely to pass the national certification examination.
