Thesis (O.T.D.)--Boston University, 2011.
Participation in challenging and intrinsically motivating recreation and leisure activities is considered vital to the development of children and youth (Hendry, 1983; Larson, 2000 as cited in King et al., 2003). Participation in activities is the context in which people develop skills and competencies, form friendships and relationships, achieve mental and physical health, express creativity, develop a self-identity, and determine meaning and purpose in life (Brown & Gordon, 1987; Fidler, 1978, Henry, 1998, Schleien, Green, & Heyne, 1993). Children with disabilities have a decreased level of participation in recreation activities as compared to their typically developing peers. This doctoral project seeks to increase participation in recreation opportunities for children with disabilities, their families, and their fellow community members. This is done through community-based interventions, including a community forum and recreation programs that utilize an asset-based, capacity building approach. The collaborative participation of the whole community in the planning and implementation of these interventions is an integral aspect of this project, as "change is more likely to occur when the people it affects are involved in the change process" (Shediac-Rizhallah & Bone, 1998, p.95). It appears that a multi-level ecological approach that includes coalition building concepts and identifies community assets while empowering community members to actively participate as embedded leaders and facilitators is an effective approach to increasing recreation opportunities for children with physical disabilities, their families, and their fellow community members. By enabling participation, the desired outcomes of greater community cohesion, increased family participation in recreation opportunities, and increased awareness of the value of recreation will lead to increased opportunities for all community members.
