Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2010.
In an increasingly mobile society that is relying more and more on digital and online forms of communication, community life, cultural rituals and general ways of communicating have been evolving. This evolution has led to new and different ways of mourning, collective grief sharing, and memorial practices. Online forms of memorializing have been the subject of scholarly research beginning in the recent past, but research into the phenomenon of YouTube video memorials is something that has not been explored in a systematic way. This ethnographic study explored how and why video memorials are created within YouTube in order to further research into the growing trend of online memorializing in general. This study found that individuals are turning to increasingly popular social networking platforms like YouTube to memorialize both the family member and the stranger. YouTube provides a highly visible, greatly accessible means and environment for friends, family and strangers alike to connect as they deal with the death of a loved one, or the death of an individual who was made visible to the public through the media. This type of memorializing has developed into a community of video mourners within the YouTube.
