The literature acknowledges that parental divorce can increase a child's risk of emotional and behavioral discord. However, there is currently limited information regarding effective treatment approaches specifically designed for young children experiencing adjustment difficulty following parental divorce. An experimental pretest-posttest control group design was used to determine if eight sessions of sandtray play therapy was effective in helping children adjust following parental divorce. The Child Behavior Checklist was administered to participants' parents in order to measure children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors. A total of 32 participants between the ages of six and ten who had experienced parental divorce within two years were recruited from family court public records and a local elementary school district. The findings of this research study were designed to extend the knowledge base regarding sandtray play therapy as a therapeutic intervention to help children adjust following parental divorce. A two-factor Analysis of Variance was performed and the results revealed a statistically significant difference between sandtray play therapy participants and wait-list control participants for both internalizing and externalizing behaviors. The results indicated that there was not a significant effect for gender or treatment by gender interaction for internalizing and externalizing behaviors. These results indicate that children who participated in sandtray play therapy following parental divorce showed significantly less internalizing and externalizing behavior problems as compared to children who did not participate in sandtray play therapy during the experimental phase of the study. The findings of this study indicate that sandtray play therapy is a beneficial therapeutic intervention for boys and girls between the ages of six and ten who have experienced parental divorce.
