Thesis (LL.M.)--York University (Canada), 2010.
There is a large body of literature that emphasizes the gendered nature of legal aid services and calls for research that utilizes experience-based approaches to examine legal aid programs. This paper explores the utility of a different methodology, institutional ethnography. Institutional ethnography shifts the focus from women's lives as objects of study to women's lives and experiences guiding the direction of the research. Through the examination of these experiences, it becomes clear what institutions and what processes are shaping poor women's lives. Poor women become the centre of the research with the end goal to create legal aid programs that account for and incorporate their diverse experiences and needs.
