Thesis (M.A.)--The American University, 2009.
For this qualitative research study, the researcher examined the perspective of indigenous students in southern Mexico concerning their experiences and opinions of formal education. Considering the importance of including all voices, opinions, and perspectives when forming and shaping educational theories and policies, it is important to seek out the voices of indigenous students and teachers in order to expand the literature and positively impact educational policy and practice. During three weeks observing a public middle school in the indigenous region of "Santa Maria", Oaxaca, Mexico, the researcher conducted activities aimed at uncovering what the perspective of the students is on the purpose of formal education; their opinions and perspectives of a fair education; and, the impact education has on their identity, their growth, and their community.
