The present study sought to investigate the effectiveness of specific practice strategies on the achievement of high school choral student sight-singing. The research questions addressed in the study are as follows: (1) Do specific practice strategies affect sight-singing achievement? (2) Is music aptitude a factor in the performance achievement of students who participate? (3) Is there a difference in the sight-singing scores between Illinois and Iowa students? Participants (n=73) from Iowa (n=41) and Illinois (n=32) were taught to employ strategies that have been linked with high achievement during sight-singing trials while avoiding behaviors that have been linked with low achievement. Subtests of the Musical Aptitude Profile were administered prior to testing in order to establish high and low groups. Pretests and posttests were audio recorded and scored by three judges using a researcher-designed rubric. A three-dimensional (2x2x2) ANOVA for state, by group, and by treatment on pretest and posttest scores revealed no significant differences between treatment groups. However, a significant difference was found between sight-singers in Iowa and Illinois (p<.0001). As expected, a significant difference was also found between levels of musical aptitude (p<.0001). Many of the specific practice strategies taught were used by participants in the treatment group, however these strategies did not have a significant effect on their sight-singing achievement. Additional strategies may be unnecessary for singers already capable of sight-singing at a high level, and the lack of strategies prior to instruction may have rendered the preparation time essentially ineffective for low-scoring students.
