Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Washington, 2010.
Very little literature exists with regard to vocal repertoire intended for young singers in the 15- to 21-year old age group. The formative stages of vocal development are critical in establishing positive and healthy singing habits. There are many components of a young singer's education, including lessons, physical and musical exercises, and vocalises, and repertoire. While all these aspects are important--and interrelated--it is repertoire, I believe, that most critically guides vocal development and cultivates musical interest and passion on the student's part. A beginning singer may even damage their voice through the choice of inappropriate repertoire--principally, repertoire that exceeds their abilities in terms of technique and expression.

This dissertation explores the choice of repertoire for the young singer, with the intention of assembling repertoire that will safely and efficiently develop the young voice, and help the singer develop a lifelong engagement with and interest in the musical arts.

Because individuals differ greatly in their development and abilities, it is difficult to generalize about the needs and characteristics of the young voice. However, the voice teacher needs to choose repertoire that stimulates the singer's interest in music, and strikes a balance between songs that are too difficult, and songs that fail to sufficiently challenge the singer's development.

The repertoire I suggest is chosen with regard to how it helps develop vocal stamina, flexibility, endurance, breath support and posture, vocal range and tessitura, core sound, and engages the singer's interest.

This study is intended not only for the vocal teacher, but also for a young beginning singer who, for whatever reason, does not have access to a vocal teacher, and studies on their own. Thus, the dissertation includes a supplemental chapter discussing a variety of practices intended to cultivate vocal health and flexibility, and tools to approach the suggested repertoire more effectively.
