Thesis (M.A.)--Long Island University, The Brooklyn Center, 2010.
The new phenomenon to develop Emotional Intelligence (EI) for success in the workplace has caught many leaders' attention. Emotional Intelligence is a relatively new phenomenon within the psychoanalytical field as a means of predicating success and leadership skills. Researchers have been amazed by the numerous predicators this concept has on personal achievement and career advancements. There are those who question the validity and promise of EI as an analytical tool for predications; especially since the actual definition of the concept is unclear. Emotional intelligence has been thought to be unique area of individual differences that is likely to underpin sets of behavior (Clarke, 2010). Such a strong concept has left researchers and advocates with questions and theory gaps to be addressed: validity, practical application and conceptualization. Past research on EI and its influence on transformational leadership, employee-supervisor relationships, career success and etc., has been extremely promising as well as exaggerated to the point that critics choose to explore the rationale of the concept. There may, however, be hope in the conceptualization of EI once research gaps have been bridged. EI could be a good indicator of individual potency. This thesis discusses recent studies and concept inconsistencies of EI.
