Making a good impression requires strategies and skills. It is often said that Americans try to do this by expressing their positive 'self,' which may seem exaggerating or bragging in Japanese culture where positive traits will not be explicitly shown. Thus, an American's good intentions of presenting self may contribute to making a wrong impression, and may lead to misunderstandings.

Because this American's tendency may be attributed to a high level of self-enhancement, this study examined the relationship between the level of self-enhancement and the speech act strategies by American learners of Japanese in presenting self situations (e.g., job interviews) and responding to compliments in Japanese cultural settings. This study also investigates the perception of native speakers' of Japanese toward unnatural responses made by Americans.

100 responses were collected by a questionnaire of cross-cultural self-presentation consisting of (a) an open discourse completion test (ODCT), (b) the appropriate statement test, and (c) the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RESE). The American participants were divided into high, medium, and low self-enhancement groups in order to examine whether there were any differences and/or relationships between the levels of self-enhancement and the speech act strategies. For the perception test, responses from 199 Japanese college students were analyzed.

Overall, the results of the ODCT indicated that there was no significant difference between the levels of self-enhancement and the speech act strategies both in presenting self situations and responding to compliments. The only difference was found in a "showing interest" strategy which was frequently used only by the high group. In the appropriate statement test, no correlation was found between the groups. The results of the perception test showed significant differences in both situations. Compared to the atypical responses made by the low group, those produced by the high group were perceived as more inappropriate.

Although the levels of self-enhancement seem not to influence speech act strategies, pragmatic failures by American learners of Japanese were found in this study. When teaching the language, Japanese teachers should try to correct this problem.
