Research indicates that rapid changes in the healthcare profession have created significant personnel related concerns for leaders the field. Problems related to motivation, managing change, inspiring and implementing organizational growth, and developing a nurturing a work environment in the changing workplace ultimately impact the productivity of healthcare organizations. Conceptually grounded in a synthesis of theories in transformational leadership and motivation, including Maslow, McClelland, Herzberg, and Bass, this quasi-experimental study tested if leadership development could impact organizational performance in the healthcare environment. The research specifically examined the impact of transformational-leadership (TL) training on the productivity of dental practices. Archival pre/post productivity data, as measured by revenue, was collected from random sample of 203 dentists who had successfully completed a standardized TL training. A paired sample t-test was used to demonstrate a statistically significantly positive impact on the productivity of a dental practice when the dentist completed TL training, and supported the conclusion that this specific approach to leadership development provided an effective intervention toward managing organizational growth and change. The study contributes to social change by providing empirical evidence that supports the efficacy of TL toward improving productivity within one sector of the healthcare industry. The positive findings of this study can be expanded to determine if TL can be effectively applied within other healthcare sectors and also document specifically how TL contributes to productivity. Ultimately, these improvements in organizational leadership practices can contribute to superior and less costly care for patients.
