With ever-increased outsourcing, managing the buyer-supplier relationship has remained a critical strategic consideration. Traditionally, the buyer-supplier relationship framework has focused on a one-dimensional continuum model ranging from cooperative to adversarial. With individual firms getting more networked, and with inter-firm networks becoming the prevalent industrial structure, the predominant framework has been less successful in explaining new modes of the buyer-supplier relationship; the current model does not capture the intensity. To operationalize relational intensity, this dissertation adopts a continuum concept of "strong -- weak tie" from the literature on network "embeddedness." According to this body of literature, the intensity of the relationship between two firms influences the extent to which the individual parties establish their own extended business networks. The existing and new dimensions are framed in such a way that the former represents relational aspects of embeddedness and the latter reflects structural facets. By integrating the two continua, a more complete buyer-supplier relationship typology is created in a matrix form, and each of the resultant four archetypes is related to relational outcome trade-offs that constitute the hypotheses of this study.

The theoretical models were tested using empirical data obtained through a multiphase field study of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc. (TEMA) and its North American supply base. Principal component-based classification technique and two causal modeling approaches with structural equation modeling and hierarchical multiple regression were applied to validate the hypothesized models.

Results generally support the hypotheses. Some noticeable findings are: (1) a significant role of relational stability in mediating the relationship between the strong-cooperative tie and a supplier's rigidity; (2) a significant mediating effect of relational synergy on the relationship between the strong-adversarial tie and a supplier's leveraging; and, (3) a strong direct and positive effect of the weak-cooperative relationship on a supplier's innovation. The models describe the basic mechanisms for some fundamental dynamics of relationships between buyers and suppliers. Findings indicate that there are clear trade-offs in terms of relational outcomes. This research ultimately demonstrates the existence of significant effects of network embeddedness in the context of the buyer-supplier relationship, particularly on the parties' strategic behavior and performance.
