In an effort to uncover variables that are associated with retirement satisfaction and to design more effective mental health interventions for retirees, several variables were assessed to determine their relationship with retirement satisfaction: perceived physical health, perceived physical activity, perceived mental health, perceived mental activity, social support, and coping style. Participants were 84 retired individuals, aged 62 to 96, mean age 75, 30% males, 70% females, from Senior Centers in Orange County, California. Ethnic make-up of the population pool was 14% African-Americans, 71% Anglos, 4% Asian-Americans, and 11% Latinos. Findings indicated that perceived physical health, perceived mental health, and social support were positively related to retirement satisfaction. Neither problem-focused coping style nor emotion-focused coping style was found to be related to level of retirement satisfaction. Post hoc analyses found that gender alone was not associated with retirement satisfaction. Suggestions for mental health interventions for retirees are proposed, such as increasing social support and improving medical compliance.
